You have heard it as well as I have. An answer is needed, a change is desired, a need has been “laid on your heart.” How do you determine whether it is the right thing to do, how do you determine if it is God’s will? Do you go to horoscopes? Do you wait for God to speak through random Bible verses? Do you pray that God would give you an answer, a sign?

Clergy to dress smartly
The Pope is reportedly urging that priests should “urgently rediscover the need to be ‘present, identifiable and recognizable for their faith, their personal virtues and their attire.’ ” Now granted I am Lutheran and not Roman Catholic, but I applaud this move and think it should be adopted by clergy across Christendom. There seems to [...]

Why are some Lutheran called U.A.C.?
In the United States, by the middle of the 19th century, the General Synod, then the largest fellowship of Lutheran congregations, was at war with itself over whether or not to allow the changes seen in American Protestantism take hold in Lutheran congregations. In 1855 Rev. Samuel Schmucker anonymously published his “Definite Platform in which he sought to end the influence of confessional Lutheranism in favor of what was termed “American Lutheranism”. But to do this it was necessary to unhinge the General Synod from the Book of Concord, especially the cornerstone document, the Augsburg Confession.
While the Definite Platform was ultimately not adopted, there were enough unionizing efforts among the Lutherans that it became common for a confessional Lutheran congregations to use the designation U.A.C. as part of its name.

Commemoration: St. Matthias, Apostle
St. Matthias is one of the lesser-known Apostles. According to the early Church Fathers, Matthias was one of the 72 sent out by Jesus in Luke 10:1ff. After the Ascension, he was chosen by lot to fill the vacancy in the Twelve resulting from the death of Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:16-25). Early church Tradition places [...]

The Time of Easter — Lent
To prepare to celebrate the feast of the Resurrection the Church sets aside a period of preparation. This forty-day preparation was first prescribed for baptismal candidates and became known as Lent. The observances of Lent are concrete reminders of the greater solemnity of this season, yet Lutherans emphasize the Gospel of Christ as central even to this penitential season. The Gospel on the Sundays in Lent do not speak of Christ’s Passion, rather they prefigure the great Easter victory.
